Psychotherapy Services

I specialize in psychodynamic psychotherapy, an evidence-based treatment that is highly effective in bringing about lasting change.

One of the core assumptions of psychodynamic psychotherapy is that tough experiences in the past -can shape our feelings, actions, and beliefs in the present. For example, it may feel self-evident that failure is inevitable; that we're not worthy of love and respect; that we're powerless in the face of other people's aggression; or that relationships are inherently exhausting and disappointing. Sometimes we have no idea we hold these beliefs -- they're just the water we swim in. But we do know that we feel angry, anxious, sad, or ashamed in ways we can't seem to resolve.

Our sessions can be a safe, accepting place for you to develop greater understanding of the factors, both present and past, that drive the suffering and conflict you experience. This doesn't mean you have to change anything. In fact, once you know more about yourself, you might like yourself better just as you are. But this work will give you more freedom about what to believe, how to feel, and what to do.

My Approach

I work in a relational manner. This means that I see our relationship -- and the feelings and thoughts we both have during our sessions -- as a potential point of focus and means of healing. My presence is warm, grounded, and empathetic.

In addition to relational psychodynamic therapy, I have training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Attachment-Focused EMDR. Both are guided, somatic methods of therapy that help develop one's capacities for self-compassion, love, wisdom, and thoughtful action. Many people find IFS and EMDR to be useful ways to work through a wide range of issues, including complex PTSD, chronic depression, and anxiety.

That said, the available research suggests that the most important thing is to find a therapist who feels like a good fit for you. That means finding someone you like talking to, someone you feel can understand you. When the fit is good, it's likely that therapy will help you reach your goals.
